TE KUITI DEFEAT OTOROHANGA. Otorohanga made a strong challenge in the first match of the season for the Howard Shield played at Te Kuiti on Saturday, Te Kuiti eventually winning narrowly by 6 matches (15 sets to 5 matches (11 sets). The result was in doubt until the completion of a combined match, in which Bathgate and Mrs. Hetet defeated Hotson and Mrs. Culley after a sterling game, Bathgate, in particular, surpassing himself. The following are the detailed results: — Men's Doubles. —Bathgate and Tate beat Hotson and Pilkington, 6 —l, 6—3; Browne and McLeod beat Ward and Anderson, 6 —3, 6—5. Ladies' Doubles.—Mrs. Hetet and Miss McLeod lost to Misses Corboy and Leatham, 6—4, 3—6, 3—6; Mesdames Kennedy and Tate beat Mrs. Culley and Miss Scarborough, I—6, 6—l, 6—o. Men's Singles. Browne lost to Ward, 3—6, 5—6; McLeod beat Pilkington, 6—5, 6 —4; Tate beat Anderson, 6 —4, 6—4.
