CONCLUSION OF FIRST ROUND.

A CENTURY TO ARNEIL. (Notes by "Mid-on.") The competition matches under the auspices of the Maniapoto Cricket Association for the Hamill Shield continued on Saturday under ideal cricket conditions. On the local Domain the Old Boys A and B teams met for the first time, while Railway, last year's champions, with a much depleted team, journeyed to Pio Pio to play that team on its own ground. A fine score of 107 was registered by "Russ" Arneil, in the latter match, the exWhangarei representative, showing little respect for the visiting bowlers. For all round cricket the form displayed on the local ground was the best witnessed here for the past decade. The improved form displayed

by batsmen and fieldsmen alike were no doubt due to the improved state of the playing ground. The clay wicket, lately laid down on the Domain under the direction and supervision of Mr. N. B. Lusk, played accurately, with the exception of an occasional rising ball. This could be remedied, perhaps, by a dressing of road oil or tar being applied to the well-rolled surface. Those players who made correct strokes playing forward with a straight bat, and waiting patiently for the loose ones, were most successful on Saturday's wicket. For the A team Jack Evans' score of 72 was a fine performance, his total including three sixes and eight fours. He made the majority of his runs from late pulls and glides to leg. Seven wickets for 48 runs ended a good afternoon's work for Evans. For the colts, A. Bowick, who batted so well the previous week, hit out vigorously for his 44. He delighted the spectators by hitting three sixes in succession. He played enterprising cricket and laid the wood on on every possible occasion. He has a good eye, although at times inclined to be reckless, he plays the cricket that keeps the crowd delighted and his team mates on tenterhooks. J. Hine knocked up 44 not out by good, sound batting, which brought the Colts' total to 170 for three wickets, when the innings was declared closed.

With 65 runs to their credit from the first innings and a batting side of no mean calibre, the A team skipper took a sporting chance in sending the B side again to the wickets. Low and Liddell, however, made a stand, the former with 44 and the latter, who got going for the first time this season, 35 not out, created a useful partnership. When time was called with Liddell well into his stride, and the grand total 105 runs for five wickets. A special feature of the game was the fine fielding of the A team. For a number of years past the Railway Club has been a power in the local cricket competitions, but this year the club has fallen on evil days. Two teams one invariably champion —■ is the club's usual quota. An innings defeat was their lot against the newly-formed Old Bays A team, and on Saturday the team which travelled to Pio Pio was only a "shadow" of the. Railway team at the heydey of its success, with the result that another three-point loss was recorded. The first round of the Hamill Shield competition has been completed, the points position of the teams being: Pia Pio 6, Old Boys A 5, Railway 2, Old Boys B 1.
