SHEEP FAMINE
IN NORTHERN AFRICA. North Africa is suffering from a sheep famine as a result of a prolonged drought which caused the death of 80 per cent, of the flocks in Algeria. Importations of North African mutton into France have practically stopped, while last year Algeria exported 1,000,000 head to France. The effect is being seen all through North Africa where mutton is the staple meat dish, because of the scarcity of meat cattle. Millions of Arabs from the Mediterranean to the Sahara have been obliged to discontinue eating mutton except once a week.
