ENOUGH TO FEED 30 PEOPLE.

Mrs. Alice Gillow, anxious to see how far 5/- would go, went out shopping and returned home complaining of the high cost of living, but this is what she obtained for her money:— One pound of butter, 4%d; Gibs, of beef at 2%d, ll&d; 81bs. of beef at 2d, 1/4; 1 sheep's head, 3d; potatoes, eggs, peas, carrots, turnips and salt, 1/6. Mrs. Gillow looked at her 7y t d change ruefully, and said it was high time prices came down. She had bought enough to feed thirty people, but the rent of her house was £3 a year! That was in 1735.
