CHINA AND RUSSIA.
ATTEMPT TO CONTINUE TRADE.
SOVIET HOUSES CLOSED
(Press Association.—r Copyright.) (Received 11.45 a.m.) Shanghai, December 19. In further explanation of the National Government’s break with Russia, Dr Wu, the Nationalist Minister of Foreigjn Affairs,, declares officially that action was taken reluctantly and solely in self defence. He denies hostility by the Government to the Russians, towards whom he has the warmest sympathy. The Nationalists’ action must not be construed to constitute a severance of political and commercial relations, as Russian trade is too extensive to be ignored by China, and some method must be devised to continue it. A search warrant on Soviet commercial agencies houses and the Soviet Consulate has been granted' by the International'Police. Ten Soviet commercial organisations have been closed rnd guarded, and the police ordered them to wind up their affairs and evacuate.
