SICKNESS AND INSURANCE SCHEME

REJECTED IN SWITZERLAND. ■PROVISION FOR OLD AGE. Berne, May 24. A referendum on the question of the establishment of a fund of 250,000,000 francs for a system of sickness disablement, old age pensions, and insurance, covering not only those already insured, but also their dependents. resulted in the rejection of the scheme by 355.000 votes to 283,000. The result is a victory for the bourgeois, who favour an alternative scheme prepared by the Federal Council, under which only aged people and orphans benefit, while the sickness disablement portion of the scheme is postponed on financial grounds.
