THE FLIGHT TO THE POLE.

Latest Cables.

NO NEWS OF THE PARTY.

FEARS FOR THEIR SAFETY. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 12.6 p.m.) Oslo, May 25. A message from Spitzbergen gives no news of Captain Amundsen. This morning the Hobby returned from Wellman Bay, having patrolled to the north and west of Dane’s Island. The party found the ice condition difficult, and members of the expedition are somewhat depressed at Captain Amundsen’s failure to return.

If the aeroplanes have been damaged the aviators will have a long and dangerous journey back. The weather is cloudy and raw, and the temperature below zero. The captain of the Fram saw from the top of Amsterdam Island open water to the northwards, where the aeroplanes might have come down.

(Capt. Amundsen and Mr Lincoln Ellswtdrth left King's Bay, Spitzbergen, by aeroplane on a dash to the North Pole. An unconfirmed report was received thalt they had reached' their destination, but there has been no further word; since. The distance of the flight is estimated at 687 miles. There were two aeroplanes, which also contained Lieuts. Larsen and Deitrichsen.) ' ■
