DOG TRIALS.

HELD AT PIO PIO.

A SUCCESSFUL DAY. The eighth annual dog trials under the auspices of the King Country Central Collie Club were held on Monday and Tuesday last, when' some splendid exhibitions were given. Though windy, the weather was fine, and the days' outing was much appreciated by a large and representative gathering. In the short head some splendid work was shown, particularly at the Maltese Cross, a difficult feature. In the huntaway the work was somewhat disappointing, the sheep proving very stubborn, and most dogs losing them on the flat. The competitors were very pleased with the location of the trials. The course, which is on Mr Coates' farm, immediately behind the saleyards, is sufficiently tricky to test the skill of shepherds and their dogs. ,

A feature of the trials was the splendid showing of comparatively young shepherds. An 18-year-old lad W. D. Neal, was second in the huntaway, while a young shepherdess, Miss Long, of Kopaki, made an extremely good showing in both huntaways and was specially commended by the judges, Messrs Stewart and Sutherland, of Te Kuiti. In the last event Mawson's Help did some splendid work, but failed to qualify for points through missing the first set of hurdles.
