MOTOR REGISTRATION.

THE NEW SYSTEM. IN HANDS OF POST OFFICE. Under the Motor Vehicles Act tho registravital of motor vehicles has passed from the hands of the local bodies into those of tho Post and Telegraph Department, and registrations are now being accepted at the Te Kuiti Post Office. The postmaster, Mr S. J. Williams, oxxplainod tut Chronicle reporter yesterday that the Act came into force on January 1, and every vohiclo must he licensed before February 1, 1925. Registration forms were supplied from the counter, and receipts for the fees were issued. These bore the car’s old number and covered the owner until lie received .the official plates wir.li his new number, which were being issued from Wellington. Owing to .the very large number of these required on short notice si.ine delay in obtaining them was inevitable, and they were non expected to lie available until February. In the case of new cars temporary plates were being issued at once. The registrations ■urn, tailed! a good deal of work which, unfortunately, came during the rush of the holiday period, when at the same time the stall' was busy with tho compulsory registration of electors. It would assist) the Department if owners of motor vehicles obtained tho necessary application for registration before applying personally to register their car. motor cycle or truck.

In rjie event of any motoV vehicle being destroyed by fire, being rendered permanently useless, or removed from tho Dominion, the owner was required to inform any post office. The fees payable for annual licenses were as follows : For every motor cycle 10s. For every private motor car £2. For every public motor car £2. For every motor coach or motor omnibus £5. For tirade motors—(a) For every oneion i.-rnck fitted with pneumatic tyres on all wheels £2. (b) For every motor lorry fitted with solid tyres £5. (c) For every motor lorry fitted with pneumatic tv res on all wheels £3. For every traction engine 05. For every trailer with three or more wheels £3. For every other trailer £l. For every other motor vehicle £2. A registration fee of 10s for each motor cycle, and £1 for each and every other motor vehicle will be charged. Motor vehicles owned by a local or public authority and used exclusively for general of local purposes, and also motor vehicles used exclusively for purposes of a public nature were declared to bo exempt by regulations under the Act.

Driving licenses will be issued by the local bodies as before. The question lias been raised that the local authorities have not yet ne-opened nf'fer the holidays, but it is pointed out that drivers have until February Ist in which to obtain their licenses. By then all local authorities will have resumed business.
