PAYING OF RATES.
ON NON-EXISTENT PROPERTY. A ratepayer in the Carterton borough has paid rates on a non-existent section for the past 17 years, and findi ing this out at last he applied to the Carterton Borough Council for a refund (says the Wairarapa News). Councillors all agreed that a refund I should he made of the total amount I paid in. 110 ;{s Id. Before doing this,* however, the Council obtained the opinion of the municipal bodies' solicitor, who stated that legally the Council could refund only the rates for the immediate preceding six years, the Statute of Limitations then coming I into operation.
