HIS BEST MAN
A remarkable story, told to illustrate the sacrifices made by the Sinn Fein majority in Ireland in support of the Treaty in 1921, was related by Mr J. H. Thomas recently. One of the prisoners sentenced to death for complicity in the Four Courts affair, he said, was tho bosom friend of a Free State Minister, Mr O'Higgins, and had been best man at his wedding only six months before. Mr O'Higgins was responsible for the execution. Great pressure was put upon him to save his friend. He refused to grant a reprieve and the man was shot. O'Higgins completely broke down at the last; and when the dead man's will was-opened it was found that he had left all his money to his old friend, who was the Minister responsible for his death.
