“NO FURTHER LIABILITY.”

THE WATER SUPPLY. At a recent special meeting of the Borough Council, called to consider the terms on which Messrs Gannon and Worley (Auckland) were asked to report on a water suply for Te Kuiti, Cr Boddie, after considerable discussion, gave written notice of his intention to move at the next meeting, “That the words ‘and that they be appointed consulting engineers to the borough’ be deleted from the resolution passed at the special meeting of the Council, held on the 29th October, 1923,” Cr Broadfoot also gave notice of his intention to move “that the offer of Messrs Gannon, and Worley, contained in their letter of the 27th September, 1923, be accepted, and that a contract to this effect be drawn, up and signed to the satisfaction of the borough solicitor.” It will be remembered that Mr Worley attended the meeting by request, and stated that no commission would be charged by his firm in connection with their report on the present reticulation, if the Council decided to carry on with its own staff any of the work suggested by them.

The above resolutions were accordingly moved by their respective proposers last night, and carried. Replying to a question from Ur Broadfoot, the Mayor stated that Messrs Gannon and Worley had assured him that they had no desire to “tie up” or “bind the borough” in any way whatsoever. They had no desire to unduly prolong the work, and if the Council, at any time, wished to purchase the plans and scheme of work, they could do so on payment of the usual reasonable engineering fee of 1£ per cent. If the Council purchased the plans on these terms “there would be no further liability on the Council.”
