THE SCHOOL PICNIC.

TE KUITI DISTRICT SCHOOL. VERY ENJOYABLE DAY. Many a childish eye grew brighter on Friday morning when it was seen that the clerk of the weather was favourably disposed to the children of the Te Kuiti School, and had provided a glorious day for their annual picnic at the racecourse. The excursion train left with a full load about 11 a.m., and on arrival at the course, parents quickly found it impossible to keep an eye on their charges, and they themselves settled down to a quiet afternoon in the welcome shade of the grandstand. The children had a most enjoyable time. There were races, games, swings,' "safe" ponies, rails to slide on, cakes, barrels of sweet gingerbeer —in fact, everything likely to delight the juvenile heart. Towards the end of a perfect day, Mr A. F. Howarth, chairman of the School Committee, presented the prizes won at the sports, warmly commending George Jacob, winner of the 880 yards and mile running events, and Mullins, winner of two wrestling events. Mr Howarth thanked the teaching staff for their splendid assistance in conducting the sports, and those members of the School Committee, particularly the secretary (Mr W. S. Cato), who worked so hard to ensure the enjoyment of the children.
