CANADIANS CAPTURE FRESNOY.
KE-TAKEN BY GERMANS. London, Thursday. Writing from British headquarters, Mr Philip Gibbß eulogises the Canadians for capturing and holding Fresnoy. The Germans held Acheville to the north and Oppy to the south, bo Fresnoy jutted out like a square bastion in the enemy's line. The Canadians had to form defensive flanks. The Germans for several days made strong counter-thrusts on each side, and finally brought the Guards to Acheville and Oppy, while the Fifteenth Reserve Division and Fifth Bavarian Division were stationed before Fresnoy. The Canadians had been relieved, and the Germane, in dense column formation, charged like a batteringram upon the south country English lads who wera now holding Fresnoy. The Englishman held on, despite frightful fire, and served their machine guns to the last. They only retreated when Fiesnoy became a death-trap. It is impossible to avoid occasional set-backs now that the Germans have decided to give battle.
