SUGAR OF MILK.
A NEW ZEALAND INDUSTRY. The Minister of Customs, the Hon A. M. Myerß, has undertken to look into the question of giving greater protection to the New Zealand production of sugar of milk, its greatest competitor being a German article. Mr Anderson, who asked an urgent question on the subject, stated that a sugar of milk factory had been established at Edendale in his district. The product was manufactured out of what was' waste material at present. The industry would, when in full awing, employ forty men. He read a letter from the Edendale company, stating that its principal competitors were in Germany and Holland The Dutch output was so small that it was never quoted in the trade papers.. Now, however, it had suddenly risen to 200 cases a week —an impossible extension in so short a time. The inference was that the product was coming from Germany, where it was not protected by the Customs to the extent of £4O per ton.
