SMALL SCORING ON BOTH SIDES. Brisbane, Monday. The first important match of the New Zealand cricket team's tour was commenced on Saturday, when Queensland was met at Brisbane. The weather was dull and the wicket soft. favouring the bowlers. Considerable interest was taken in the game, there being an attendance of several thous- | ands. Evans, the Queensland captain, won the toss, and sei.t New Zealand to the wickets Snedden and Hemus were the pioneer batsmer. and they opened cautiously to the 1 .wling of Barstow and lonmonger. Marshall and Fennelly opened Queensland's first innings to the bowling of Reese and Bennett. A poor start was made, three wickets being down at one stage for 24. Marshall, however, batted well, and, although beaten by Reese on several occasions, compiled 42, the side being dismissed for 124. Snedden and Hemus opened the visitors' second innings on a vastly improved wicket, Barstow and Iron monger being the bowlers. Snedden fell to Barstow in the second over, but Tuckwell, who, wkh Hemus, showed good form, remained together for some time. Taylor and Patrick played out time, despite frequent changes in the bowling. When stumps were drawn on Saturday the visitors had lost four wickets for 64 in their second innings. At the luncheon adjournment to-day New Zealand had nine wickets down for 152 run a.
