COUNTY COUNCIL SOCIAL.
MR W. J. HOFFMAN'S RETIREMENT. At the conclusion of the usual monthly meeting of the Waitomo County Council on Monday evening, the councillors and a number of friends from Otorobanga and Te Kuiti assembled in the Council ChambeF, the occasion being the making of a presentation to Mr W. J. Hoffman, on his retirement from the County Council. Mr A. Schoies, County chairman, presided. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, the guest of the evening failed to appear, and the chairman in apologising for Mr Hoffman's absence said nobody could ac count for the fact, but he was sure if it had been humanly possible Mr Hoffman have got there. He had been expected right up to the last moment, and it was too late to postpone t'-e function. They would celebrate the occasion as had been intended, and the presentation could be made to Mr Hoffman in person on the date of the annual meeting of the Council. The chairman then proposed the health of the new councillor for Te Rauamos, Mr Potts, which met with a suitable response at the hands of the new councillor. Other toasts honoured during the evening were — "The Guests." Mr Berry—Messrs O'Connor and Ormsby; "Pioneers," Mr Claridge—Messrs O'Dwyer, Carrol], Gould, and Berry; "County Council Officer?,' 7 Mr J. A. Ormsby Messrs Mora and Gould; " Public Servants," Mr. Steel —Messrs Powell and GiiTord ; County Council," " Mr Free —Messrs Smyth and Berry; "Contractors," Mr Mora—Mr Rothery "Press," Mr Blackman — Messrs Ciaridge and Steel. Items were rendered during the evening by Messrs Blaekmrn, R. and P. Cotter, O'Connor. A. Ormsby and Mora. Mr Gould presided at the piano.
