ASSESSMENT OF DUTY
FARMERS" UNION ACTION
The question of the duty charged en farming implements imported to the Dominion has been the subject of representations by the Farmers' Union from time to time, and Major Busk, j at the meeting of shareholders of the Te Kuiti Dairy Company on Thurschy, referred to correspondence which he had received from the Customs Department concerning the machine known as the "Agrimotor.'* The Union had made application to the department with respect to the assessment of duty on the machine, and the following letter had been receive in reply : "With further refereiic? to,, your letter of the '.'rh inst., forwarding copy of a communication from Mr G. N. MeCutcheon, of Matata, with respect to the 'Agrimotor,' ] am now directed [by tin Minister of Customs to inform you that the oil engine and i the agricultural implement portions of the machine will be separately j assessed for duty purposes. The I oil engine will be admitted free if it is iof British make, and charged with i duty at 120 per cent, ad valorem if it is lof foreign manufacture.
