AWAKINO COUNTY.
i SUBDIVISION OR CONTINUANCE. COUNTY REMAINS OPERATIVE. Almost immediately after the bringing into operation of the Counties Act in the Awakino County the newlyelected council decided to take a vote of the ratepayers of the district for the nurposa of determining whether to continue in operation. The alternative was the merging of various portions of the new county into the older established counties contiguous to Awakinc. Awakino is essentially a backblock county, having no wellestablished centre within its borders from which the work of the county could be readily carried out. Voting papers were issued, and at a meeting held at Waitangururu on Saturday last the returns were counted, the result being a majority of eight votes in favour of continuing as a separate county, 9 others favouring merging into Waitomo, 31 Kawhia, 11 Ciltfon, making a total of 111, while 119 votes were recorded in favour of Awakino County control.
