WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.
ENGINEER'S REPORT. I beg to report upon the various works in hand under the charge of the council since your last meeting, as follows :
Potaka. —Mr Lewis is making satisfactory progress with his metalling contract on his road. About 55 chain? have now been metalled, and a considerable amount of metal quarried. Totoro.—Messrs Hickson and West have now completed about two and a quarter miles of metalling ort this road.
Te Kuiti-Mokau.—A small contract has just bsen let on this road, west of Paemako, to extend the present metalling a further ten or twelve chains. Miroahuiao to Mangaotaki. On this road a contract has been Ist to metal some of the worst places, covering a distance in patches of about 22 chains. —Flans of a contract have also been prepared and submitted to the Pubic Works Department for widening about ten chains of formation near the bridge over the Mangaotaki stream. Arapae. —Mr Innes3 has not yet completed his firat metalling contract on this road. Several places where the metal, ori being cut was found to the insufficient, has to be completed, and more screens added in places. On the second contract he has metalled, but not yet blinded, a distance of about a mile.—Mr Ormsby now practically completed his contract on this road, which extended a distance of two miles. I have also arranged with him to complete, by day labour, the metalling required from the ei,d of his contract to a point near where Mr Rothery's contract starts. —Mr Rofchery has completed about one and a quarter miles of metalling on this road, but has now to cease work owing to the road becoming unfit to receive metal.—Mr Forsyth is now making good progress with his bridge building contract, and should finisti at an early date. Hangatiki to Waitomo. Messrs Tarry and Cartwright have made good progress during the month with their metalling contract on this road, and if the weather permits should complete the work by the end of .the present week. —Mr Lawson has now metalled about a mile along his contract, but as che road is beginning to cut up, he will be doing vpry little more carting this season. Caves Road. —Mr Ryan is doing good work on this road, and has now completed about 55 chains. Ngapaenga. —Mr Rothery has commenced crushing and metalling on this road, and a distance of about 20 chains has been completed. Several pipe culverts have also been put in. Pungarehu. As instructed, the widening of the uncompleted portion of this road is now being carried out by day labour. Otorohanga to Pirongia.—The erection of a bridge on this road was completed during the month. Maire.—The contract recently let to extend the formation on this road is now nearly commpleted. Hauturu to Otorohanga. —Specifications of a metalling contract extending a distance of about 75 chains from end of present metalling were prepared and teders for the work are now advertised.
Waitomo Valley Road.—The Public Works Department have approved of specifications for widening and metal ling about two miles on this road, tenders for which are now invited. General. Repairs and improvements to roads are being carried out as expeditiously as Dossible in various parts of the county, although considering the season of the year the roads throughout are in very fair order. —The propojed road, to connect the Miroahuiao-Mangaotaki road with the Te Kuiti-Awakino road, near the Pio Pio school was surveyed during the month.
