A PECULIAR CASE.
THEFT CHARGE DISMISSED
[BY TELEURATII.—I'RKSS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, This Day.
An extraordinary case occupied the attention of Mr Cutten, S.M., yesterday. James Reid, charged with the theft of £3 fss and one pound of tobacco, the property of A. Duff. The police evidence was to the effect that on Sunday last complainant left the Criterion Hotel for a day on the water, and Reid was in the hotel at the time. Next day Duff got Sergeant Ramsay to search Reid's room. A portion of the lost tobacco was found in accused's portmanteau. Reid, when shown the tobacco, showed real surprise, and declared someone must have put it there to throw suspicion on him. Reid stated he is manager of a wine business where he has been employed for the past eight years. He was never near complainant's room. Mr Cutten said he had no hesitation in refusing to commit accused for trial. He was perfectly satisfied that Reid's explanation was correct. Some one was guilty of a mean, despicable act by placing the tobacco in the portmanteau.
