POLITICAL PROTECTION LEAGUE.

A new organisation has recently been formed in Canterbury, for the purpose of securing for the farming community adequate political representation in Parliament and the country generally. Mr David Jones, a past president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Fanners' Union, has been appointed organiser, at a salary of .-t'oUO a year, and at an early date is to tour bis province in the interests of the new movement. Mr Jones and Mr O. F. Clothier, president of the- New Zealand Farmers' Union in Canterbury, have been paying a visit to the Auckland province, and in conversation with a •'Chronicle" representative it was slated that the policy of the new party would be considered and t'ormuiatod at an early date, after consultation with other provincial districts. What the policy is to be is not at present defined. It seems likely that a modified attitude towards protection, as a national policy, will become a plank in the platform. It is felt by sonic members of the Farmers' Union that a policy of pure free trade, without regard to local circumstances as it affects the trader, the business man and the manufacturer cannot continue to be an axiomatic principle in the platform of the Union Some interesting developments are certain to come forward within the next few months.
