NUISANCE NO. 1.
To the Editor. Sir,—Some time ago the Borough Council ornamented the corners of some of our principal streets with notices threatening proceedings against the owners of ail horses, cattle, etc., found trespassing on the footpaths of this "city." One would think, from the way these notices are obeyed and treated, that the public treat them as a joke. One has only to stand a very short time at the corner of any of the principal streets to see that the whole thing is a farce from start to finish. Take Sheridan and Taupiri streets for example—the corners of these streets are expressly considered by all and sundry hoodlums, as being there for the purpose of showing how to take short cuts across the corners, and seeing that we have spent one loan in forming the streets and paths, there is now no sign of any difference between road and footapth. And especially in the early morning, whole troops of horses are let out of the enclosures where they have spent the night, or let out of their stables, and wholly unattended, rush madly to the river for a drink—road or footpath is all one to them. How it will be when any portion of our present loan is spent on the roads and footpaths remains to be seen. Of course, lam aware that any resident can prosecute the owners of these animals for an offence under the Public Works Act, but it is hardly within the province of an individual resident to do so, but I think it i-3 quite within the jurisdiction of our Borough Council to take steps to abate this nuisance by a few prosecutions. NufF sen !—I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
