The Bills of Exchange Act provides that a promissory note signed by a Maori is invalid, unless it is made out in tho Maori language, or bears a Maori translation on the back/"""S«wu» time ago a Dargaville Magistrate, Mr Scott Smith, gave judgment in a case of this sort for the defendant, a halfcaste woman. Yesterday Judge Edwards, holding that a half caste was not a Maori, up-held an appeal.
