WATER POWER WORKS BILL.
Speaking on the second reading of the Aid to Water Power Works Bill, the other night, Sir Joseph Ward said the principal water power undertakings that the Government contemplated putting in hand were at Kaituna, Hutt, Lake Coleridge, Teviot, Lake Hauroto, Makuri, and the West Coast. The Kaituna water supply was intended to serve Auckland and the southern portion of Auckland, including the Bay of Plenty. It was proposed to establish 10,000 horse-power. The Kaituna scheme would meet the requirements of Auckland city. As regards the North of Auckland, it was proposed to develop the Wairua Falls. Three thousand horse-power could be developed for £IOO,OOO. This would provide for the supply for Whangarei and Dargaville, and the additional requirements of the North of Auckland. Sir Joseph Ward indicated a number of other schemes throughout the Dominion, which would cost in all £l,975,000, and would be completed in four years.
