AUCKLAND CUSTOMS RETURNS.
A Big Month in Wool. The Customs returns for the port of Auckland for the month of March'have been made up, and afford gratifying evidence of the steady progress of Auckland's export trade. The most gratifying increase in the list of exports for last month is that on wool, which reached the substantial total of £212,759 or £138,170 more than during March, 1909. Butter shows a substantial increase and the abnormally large export of cheese constitutes a record for the port, and represents an increase of £34,243 over the figures of March of last year. This is parily explained by the fact that considerable quantities of cheese previously consigned by the Kaipara were reshipped again last month, and consequently swelled the total. But, apart from this, the quantity of cheese exported from the Auckland.province has been steadily growing. The heavy drop in the export of frozen produce was almost entirely due to the recent slaughtermen's strike, and cannot be taken as indicating any set-back in the frozen meat trade. A comparison of the figures of leading items of export for last month and March, 1909, is contained in the following, the figures in he first instance being for 1910-Butter, £92,600 — £70,773; cheese, £39,671 2 8; phormiurn, £B4O8 —£2737; tow, £412 —£359; beef, frozen £7282—£5022; lamb, frozen £12,937 —£23,233; mutton, frozen £295 —£492; kauri gum, £54,205 £939; skins, £1655 —£1735; timber, £14,797—£14,304; wool, £212,759 £74,589; gold, £67,330 silver. £11,029—£20,343.
