SECRET COAL MINE.
Where Is It? With regard to the "new" coal discovery on the Main Trunk line that the Minister for/Public Works is . reported to have said is to be kept secret for the present, Mr J. W. Ellis, of Hamilton, writes that the coal was first discovered by Mr R. W. Holmes (Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department),- when' he was locating the railway, and was ! no doubt duly reported by him. He adds: When-1 was fighting for the 'central Jine' piany years ago I supplied the information to a Parliamentary Committee set up to consider the question of route, fully expecting that it would receive full attention and the lEind be reserved -foy aa!e, but although the committee referred to the matter in their report, nothing was done to discover the value of the find, and I am told that the great bulk of the land in the locality has since been disposed of. The coal is on the upper waters of the Retaruke stream, about two miles west from the present railway. are also out-crops lower down the Retaruke, towards the Warigahui,' and it seems as if it was a continuation of the coal measures on the Tangar£»kau, pp west side of the Wgngami!."
