FOOTBALL.

Rcter* Match with Auckland. The end of the present football season is likely to prove a busy time for the local players. Already two very important representative fixtures have been arranged to take place at Te Koiti, and at least one other outside match should he played. Hie chief fixture is that o* the Auckland representative team, which has been definitely arranged for September 4th. The local players will meet the full strentgh of Auckland on that date as the team will be on its rejurn from Taranaki and will stop at Te Koiti between 2 a.ro. on Saturday morning and 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. In the light of the previous game the local players cannot hope to avert defeat at the hands of the doughty eity players; still, enough was learned by the countrymen to have improved them very considerably. Seeing that our forwards put op a good fight at Auckland there is every reason to hope that with strict attention to practice they will again be able to keep their formidable opponents busy. It should be extremely gratifying to our players *,© know that the Auckland Union is ranking them sufficiently high to meet a representative fifteen. Such an estimate may not be agreed with by local supporters of the game; still, to one witnessnig the match at Auckland and acquainted with the disabilities under which our men travelled, there is every reason to believe that a creditable showing will be given by our men on their own ground. Few of the most sanguine and enthusiastic supporters of the game in this distiret looked forward to a visit of the Auckland representatives and the game should give rise to grent interest throughout the district. The date set for the fixture is September 4th. and the Hamilton match is to take place on the first or second Saturday following. A working bee will be held in Te Kuiti Domain on Thursday afternoon next, for the purpose of improving the ground. Jt is to be hoped all footballers and supporters of the game will attend. I A letter on the subject of the Mokauttj—Nehenehenui protest is unavoid- | ably held over till next issue. The New Zealand footballers in Aus- j tralia struck a bad day on Saturday j last. The Ponsonby Ctub team was | defeated by the Metropolitan Union ; by 13 points to 9, and the Maori team under the management of Mr J. T. Hetet, worn defeated by Queensland by SB points to It. J
