ATHLETIC & CYCLING CLUB

MEETING AGAIN ADJOURNED The adjourned annual meeting of the Kaikoura Athletic 5, and Cycling Club took place at the Drill Hall on Friday night, there being an attendance of 18. Mr L. S. Shannon (president) presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr F. H. Flower, who had rendered valued services to the club. Those present stood in silence as a mark of respect to the deceased. Apologies were received for the absence of Alessrs G. Hoadley, J. Pugh, F. J. Monk, (). Monk, A. Edgar. 11. Hayward, H. Harrison, K. Wareham, and P. AT. Kerr. The report and balance-sheet were read, the latter showing the receipts to have boon £2ll 12/7 and expenditure £lB3 2/7, leaving a credit balance of £2B 10/-. Assets were set down at £3l 12/1. The report ami balance-sheet were adopted. The chairman, in presenting his report covering the activities of the club, remarked that at the annual meeting there was an attendance* of 10 or 12. That night those present numbered 18, and it ivas regrettable that there was not a representative of the business community present—even moral support had not been forthcoming. The affairs in connection with the club appeared to be left to a few willing enthusiasts. This year the club is faced with the matter of repairing and renovating the

cycle track, and it was a question as to whether the club could face the responsibility. Another difficulty would bo the securing of logs for the hushmen’s events, as he had learned that logs would not be procurable from the Kowhai, and this would be a serious handicap. Following a review of the financial position, ATr Shannon stated that he had taken an active part in the club since 1925, and intimated that he did not intend to seek re-election to the office of president. He expressed thanks to the ladies for valued services, also to Air V. Wright (secretary). the Press, and those who had been associated with him on the committee. He wished the club every success. Air Wright, referred to the excellent services rendered to the club by Air Shannon over a long period and moved that a .vote of thanks and appreciation be recorded in the minutes. The motion was carried by acclamation. Mr J. L. Thornton offered the use of his lorry to ('art clay for the track, and his offer was accepted with thanks. Mr I’. S. Humin said it would be regrettable if the club were to disband. Kaikoura athletic meetings had been very successful and were looked upon as the best held in country districts, and some goo’ll cyclists had emerged from the district. The cycle track was a problem, but it was first necessary to decide whether the club was to carry cn. With a good track cycling would again boom in Kaikoura. He moved that the club carry on. This was seconded and carried. The Chairman stated that he believed the, tar-sealing of the track would cost in the vicinity of £6O, and with preparation and other expenses it might cost £l2O. Election of Officers The meeting then proceeded to elect officers and got as far as the secretary’s position, when it was decided to adjourn until Thursday next. The officers elected were:—Patron, Mr J. Davidson; president, ATr F. .1. Monk; vice-presidents, Alessrs H. A. Fairweather, B. Dooley, C. Smart. P. Curran, A. B. Clark, A. W. Barker, W. A. Nelson, P. S. Humm, E. H. Workman, P. Brunel, G. D. Smith, H. R. Smith, E. J. Williams, T. Knight, P. Alorris, E. Firkin, G. C. Wallace, H. Hayward, J. L. Thornton, and W. H. Dalzell; auditor, Air A. Gooch. As it was impossible to secure a secretary, it was decided to adjourn until Thursday, and that in the meantime efforts be made to secure a. man to carry out the secretarial duties. If the club cannot get officials to carry on the affairs of the club, thereis no other alternative than the disbandment of the club. A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and the meeting adjourned.
