The Hon. R. Semple, Minister for Public Works, accompanied by .Mr J. Wood (Chief Engineer), and Mr E. P. Mcarhen. member for Winirati, are tx> arrive in Kaikoura about. 6 o’clock this evening, and later will be the guests of the local branch of the New Zealand Labour Party <>t a dance to be 1101,1 >n th<- Drill Hall. Dining the evening the Minister will probably give a brief address, and as he is recognised as a lively speaker, with always something new to relate, those who attend can look forward to an interesting hour, apart from an enjoyable evening’s dancing. The Ministei for Public Works is certainly getting things done, aud the fact that the resumption of construction work on the South Island Main I runk railway is in progress, and upwards of six hundred, men employed on it. should be sufficuent guarantee that the Government intends to finish the work. On Frida;? the Labour Government celebrated its first birthday, and perhaps Mr Semple will explain just what has. been accomplished during the first year of its reign, and what it intends to do during the next session. Kaikoura residents should make a point of being present at the function to-night. Mr Semple may be carrying a gun, for he enjoys a little shooting, but there is no need to fear him. as he is just one of those homely, kind-hearted individuals whom everyone, likes to meet ami have a chat with, and there is no need to bring your running shoes.
