KAIKOURA TROTTING CLUB
AN ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING RACES ON FEBRUARY’ 27 There was an attendance of over fifty members at the adjourned annual meeting of the Kaikoura Trotting Club, held in the Band Room on Thursday night, and the proceedings were characterised with enthusiasm and earnestncss. Mr W. S. Bennett, President, presided and explained what had taken place at the annual meeting. A thorough canvass of the district had been made with the result that 204 men and 23 women had been enrolled as members. The canvassers had been well received and the people of the district had shown keenness to continue with the annual trotting meeting. The position now was that the club could go ahead confidently and hold the races on February 27. The thanks of the club were due to those who had undertaken the canvassing of the district. It was necessary now to elect officers and a good working committee. (Applause). Apologies were received for the absence of Messrs A. Gooch, R. Ballant.vne, R. Alahoney, S. .Sharpe, B. Burland, A. W. Barker, A. Keenan, E. Wallace. T. S. Valentine, J. W. Anderson, S. O’Callaghan, and E. Firkin. The President announced that Air B. Dooley had presented the club with a silver cup, Airs Le Clere Latter another silver cup, and the National Cash Register Co. a trophy to be selected by the committee. Thanks were accorded the. donors. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mr F. Gibson in his illness, and the hope expressed that he would soon be restored to health. Election of Officers The following officers were elected: —Patroness, Airs L. C. Latter; patrons, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes and Mr E. P. Mcachen, AI.P.; president, Air W. 8. Bennett; vice-presidents, Afessrs F. J. Alonk, Le Clerc Latter, and T. R. Alextreasurer, Air A. B. Clark; auditor, Air A. Gooch; general committee, Alcssrs E. C. Latter, J. J. Trewin, J. Hewson, J. J. Harnett, I. Slapc, J. Al. Reid, and W. Aloir; stewards, Messrs E. Wallace and R. Ballantyne. Recommendations The following recommendations were made to the committee:—That a flat rate be charged for admittance to the course and enclosure; that a district and saddle event be included in the programme; that the number of complimentary tickets be restricted folpeople living in the county; that the stakes be increased and payment of transport of horses be discontinued; that a working bee be arranged to clean up the course and renovate the buildings. The President called for volunteers for a working bee, and 90 per cent, of those present signified their intention of being in attendance, the others agreeing to pay a forfeit of 5/- for non-attendance. Guarantors were asked for and seventeen agreed to accept responsibility. Phe President said it was gratifying to see members coming forward with such enthusiasm to back up the club. He said he felt sure that the guarantors would not likely be called upon, nevertheless it was nice to see that the club had such a healthy backing. He would notify when the working bee was to meet. Air Bennett, in conclusion, thanked members for coming along and for the assistance rendered. A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and the meeting closed.
