N.Z. HORSE WINS NARROWLY AIELBOURNE, November 3. The New Zealand horse Wotan, a rank outsider, won the. Melbourne Cup to-day in record time. He finished brilliantly, to beat Silver Standard in the last few- strides by a neck. Balkan Prince was third and Queen of Song was fourth. The weather was ideal and there was a very big attendance. Wotan put up a remarkable performance in the. Cup. He was third to last half-way, but finished brilliantly, to w-in in the last few strides from Silver Standard, who was second in the Metropolitan Handicap and the Caulfield Cup. Balkan Prince finished strongly, and just beat Queen of Song for third place. Silver Ring was never dangerous. Desert Chief was prominent at the turn, but died away. Young Crusader tired after making the pace. Talking had every show, but failed to stay. Sporting Blood was not sighted. It was a great result for the bookmakers. Wotan was regarded as a doubtful runner at the week-end. He was thought to be a Melbourne Cup hope last year, but failed to stand the preparation. Mala finished gamely. Disalto was always prominent, and had a comfortable win in the Railway High-weight Handicap. Il Duce was a promising fifth, and should win soon.
