Ft is pleasing tn announce that Miss K. Cottrell (Be>ty). who has been suffering from an attack of pneumonia, is now progressing favourably. Prizes for both adults and children will be awarded for fancy dresses worn ,at the Mackenzie School fancy dress The Government has accepted the offer of the Bank of New Zealand to lend the sum of £1,125,000 at 5} per cent, to strengthen the finances of the Advances Department. Mr and Mrs Harneiss, of One Tree Hi 11. gave a social evening aud dance in their woolshed last night, which proved a most successful and enjoyable function. Copies of the Star and Cheviot News can be obtained at Mr T. West’s Boot Store. Air "West is also authorised to accept advertisements for insertion in the Star and News, and his receipt will be su ffieien t discharge. Mr Donald Fraser has so far recovered from his recent severe illness that he is hoping to leave Cheviot for Tiiuaru t<»morrow. After a short stay there he is advised to go to the mountains for :t few weeks. We tust he will return vUh completely restored health and st length. Mr. F. E. Flute (a returned soldier and contractor for conveying children to school), intimates that he is prepared to convey picnic an<l other parties anywhere : t reasonable rates, ami that he is prepared io undertake carling of any description. Orders may be left at Mr T. West’s Boot Store. The usual fortnightly euchre party ami dance, in aid of the Library Fund, was held at Parnassus on Saturday, September 13, when there was a good attendance. The winners of the prizes for the evening were Mrs Philpott and Mr I - rater, and Mrs Hill and Mr Hopkins were awarded the consolation prizes. After supper dancing was indulged in, to music supplied by Mr Hill and the school gramophone.

To-night, a grand dance is to be held to celebrate the re-opening of the Cheviot Public Hall, when the new dressing room and the lounge will be in use for the first time. A pianist has been engaged from Christchurch, and a. good supper will be provided. The prices of admission are quite reasonable, and as Cheviot residents take a legitimate pride in their hall, it is expected that a large number will attend the re-opening dance, which is under the auspices of the Hall Committee.

Mr Mclntosh, Hurunui Rabbit Board Inspector, met with a nasty accident on Monday afternoon. He was at the Hurunui Bridge, on Mr C. J. Westland’s property, and was in the act of mounting ;; somewhat restive pony, when the animal swerved quickly, and in turning, lashed out. kicking Mr .Mclntosh in the ribs, just under the region of the heart. Fortunately no bones were broken, but he was severely bruised ami shaken. Mr Alan Westland conveyed him home, ami it is pleasing to learn that lie is progressing favourably, ami he hopes to be about again in a day or two.
