LABOUR AND LIBERAL. A EAPEOCHMENT TO BEAT TOE EXTREMISTS (By Bteetru TUagiipt—Oonul|M), .(Ana. Bi«a in. ud Bn OabU.) LONDON, Dprombor 7. It is reliably stated .that a raprocbmient, which is being attempted between Labourites and Liberals, may eventuate in an informal understanding ensuring a comparatively long tenure of tie Labour Government. The purpose of the promoters is understood to be to stabilise the Govern ment which, while excluding the Tories, on the one hand and the Socialist ex tremists on the other, will include mod crate Labouritas and advanced Liberals, and, perhaps, a few progressive Consor vatives. The movement originated at .Mr Mae Donald’s suggestion that, in non Party matters, the Progressives might co op orate in a sort of Council of State. The first overt movement in 'this direction was an informal consultation be tween Mr MacDonald, Herbert Samuels and Sir John Simon, which, althougL practically limited to matters of proce dure, implied & certain degree of co-op er&tion. Meanwhile, Liberal newspapers are significantly sympathetic. It is understood the movement aims at co-operation, not necessarily a coali tion. Events in the House of Commons ( during the week, notably Liberal in tervention in the Cabinet Insurance Bill dilemma, has given colour to the rap rochment, of which Labour ’s endorse ment may be fortcoming in a fortnight It will mean Mr MacDonald will br able to snap his fingers at the Haxton Kirkwood-Caves revolt. | The Liberals magazine asks: Why not do the com mon sense thing and call on Lloyd' George and Mr Baldwin to establish an “All Parties” Committee for conquest of unemployment. It is no longer reasonable to hope the Government can djeal with the unemployment problem without aid from the Parties since it has been proved that Mr Thomas has no schemes which can immediately operate. It is stated that M. Snowden, at yesterday’s meeting will Labour Commoners, threatened to rcsig/ < i.f more demands were made for money for unemployed insurance. The attitude of the Clydesiders ij doubtful, as oisv one, Buchanan, attend «*d the meeting.
