REEFTON STATE SCHOOL.
The attention of parents having children attending the above school is called to the following list of absentees. The return is made up for 5 days, or 10 attendances, and it will be readily seen that unless the children are compelled to attend school regularly, or at least a littl&:n.ore regularly than has been the rule of late, the results at the next examination cannot be any other than very poor. There can be no earthly reason why the teachers should be handicapped in the way they are through absenteeism, and parents. In their own interests and in that of their children, should endeavour to aid the school" .-.fcaff as much as possible,, instead of quietly allowing theif children to grow up in ignorance. Had there been any epidemic prevailing during the past week the absence
if so many children could easily be explained, but fa nothing of the kind has been the case, what excuse have the parents to Tiake? When the legal sohool holidays are in force we hear great complaints about the length of time (six weeks) that the schools urn closed during the year, but although tha teachers are entitled to 8 weeks holiday (and this by law, not as a rule o! the local Sohool Committee) the head master, Mr Burnham, and his staff, have hitherto foregone two woeka of the t eight,., in iheir etdeavors to place ttl§ Beefton school high up on the list Etithe examination Let any person take a walk through, our .streets /during school hours and he will see a( least a score of children of a school age playing about. This matter is a very serious one, and we hope that the head master will never again have occasion to publish what we may call a black list. The roll numbers are :—
