BONUS FOlt GOLD-SAVINQ APPARATUS. mHE Provincinl Council of Otago being X d<">irous of stimulating invention, and socuntig the use of gold saving apparatus in connection with hydraulic mining adapted to the purpose of extracting gold from auriferous earth more completely than any of tho machines or methods at present in use, has votod tho sum of £250, to be offered as a bonus for tko invention of such an apparatus, Bubjoct'tb such competition and regulations as his Honor the Superintendent may seem fit Notice is hereby gi"en in accordance with the vote of the Council, that plans and proposals fov Bu'ch ' an apparatus will be received for consideration, up till tho first day of August next ensuing. The following particulars are published for the information of intended exuibitore of plans. The plana and proposals will bo submitted to a body of judges, composed of experienced miners, and such other persons as his Honor tho Superintendent may appoint, and in considering them the following points will be liept in view :-r. 1. The cost of the apparatus as it appears on the plan, and its probable cost and toarand | wear. 2. The readiness , with , which it can be secured in any part of a tail race, and be from* one part 1 to another and again ; secured.' • .-- 3. Its adaptability.' to the different widths *nd fall,^ of tail races used in different districts | lo the varying quantities of water used either by chdice' or necessity for flushing the same'} and to the different kinds of washdirt from which gold is obtained in the Province. Inventors are expected to be conversant with! the machines and methods at present in use, and not to pifer. simple reproductions of the same. ..,,.■ They "are also expected not to offor reproductions of machines 1 or methods which have fallen into disuee. They can obtain practical information on those and other points, by application through tho post to the Central Mining Association at Naseby. If, in tllo opinion of the judges appointed any jilan shall .appear to be worthy of adoption by the miners in the Province,, the Government undertakes to furnish copies of the same f o each, of the Mining Associations in . the Province with full instructions as to inventions of the inventors, aud the payment of the bonus will thon bo determined in the following manner, payment being due within eight months from the date at syhich the copies of the plans ahd instructions have been issued to the various Mining Associations. Uy.the fact'of tho apparatus being used by at least twenty-five sluicing companies in the Province, employing an average of at least fivo men each, fn 1 the period of six montliß, anc l the intention of the same companies to oontinue die use thereof ; such fact and such, intention being verified by the affirmation before a Warden, of the Managers, or repi esentativeo of such companies. In the event of two or more plans bf uig considered worthy of trial, the Government will determine in what manner the competition shall be carried on, and the best plan dis- j covered. As the bonu,s is only intended to itimulate in'veiitivo genius, every inventor may reap a further benefit from his invention if he thiuk fit, by taking out a patent.
