INANGAHUA OOTJNTY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of tho members of the County Council was held in the o,lfice, Broadway, on Monday last : Bres- " ent, Messrs Brennan. (Chairman), Bayfeild^ Davies, Byrne and I^elly. T^a m,inu, tes of tho former, meeting , were read qn,4 confirmed. I The Olerk read, copies of a,ll correspond^ce forwarded since |;he last meeting. Me^:« Walton, girton, and Cam,pb.ell here, entered as a deputation, relative, to xoa,d work in Broadjway, and on the .motion, of i£r Bayfeild;, the regular order iof business was suspended, in order to hear the deputation,. ]^r pulton Bai,d that the proposal to farther put a,way the hill in Broadway by a d^.pijli of eighteen, inches would, if. acted !u,ppjn, yery seriously inconvenience, property holders, in the vicinity. As it was some of the houses wero loft twp feet higher than the road. They suggested that instead of the road being reduced to a further, extent, that it should be metalled up to its former level, and the lower, portion of the street approaching the hill raised, and reduce the gradient by that means. Thp. Chairman explained that the .work had been, carried out altogether at the suggestion of the engineer. It was. not inijeo.de.d to, reduce the hill further. i Mjr Jjacobs.en* who vsfas. also present, complained that the contractor w.aa, not carrying ou,t the wor,k to, tb,o bpsl; advan- \ tage, as he was depositing falling on, the upper,. side of Bridge street and leaving a ; dangerous, hpllpw on th,e opposite, sido. i T;be Clerk said that by th,e qpecifi,ca- \ tions the contractor w,as. to run out Ijbe a, line, w.ith, the centre o£ the I road, ; Mr,, E^ir.ton, endorsed the. re.m,ar.ks of jMr Da,l,top, as. fa tho. ne(jes.6i ( ty o^ r.a.isipg , Broadw.ay. !; After spmp further remarks, tlw. mattjer w.as, referred f;o the engineer to. reppr.t. with the matter on the former occasion 1 had been altogether guided by Courtney's . representations., and there was very little doubt now that the facts ha 4 bpen misrepresented. After further discussion ft wag decided pn the motion of Mr Davies, seconded by Mr Byrne, that the Council interfere no further between the parties. Regarding the application for a do>* nation to the town band, Mr Davies was in favor of voting thp sum asked for, if the Council ha.d the power, Mr Bayfeild would gladly support the vote, but was afraid the Council had no power, to grant money for such a purpose. He would be happy to subscribe individually. The Chairman concurred tb,a,t there was no power in the Act for such a grant, and, as the sum asked was small he thought there would b.e no. difficulty in making it up by subscription. He would willingly subscribe, A lon,g discussion arose as to the ad-? visability of purchasing a horse, saddle and bridle for the u*e of the engineer. Mr Byrne was of opinion that by adopting that course the Council would save the price o.f the horso in three months. Mr Davie3 was of the same opinion. The amount of money paid by the Council for horse-hire wns something astonishing, rand', it was high, time that something was done b get rid o.f that form of expenditure. Mr Eelly thonght thoy should do the $hing properly while they were about it, and purchase a buggy also. Ho could not understand why the officers of the Council here should not do as they have to do in other places, and walk. They could not go to Black's Point or Fern Mat, without having a. horse to ride. The next thing wanted would, be a groom. Officers of the. Council seemed to go about like Shahs of Persia, and, at tho same time, the work of the County was beine neglected. Mr liayfoild waS; anxious to see tho expenditure for. horso-hire reduced, but would profer to ace tenders allied for the supply of a horso to the engineer, eithor by the day or, month. It was ovontually decided on the motion oi' M-r. Byrne, seconded by Mr Bavies, that a horse b.e purchased. With respect to tjko petition of the inhabitants of Hampton, praying for a separate County, it <wn3 resolved on the motion of Mr Pavios that tho Colonial Secretary be informed that tlip. Council has no objection to ' offer to. tho granting of the prayer pf the petition. After disposing of somo other formal business, tl\e Council adjourned to tljie 12ih. pro*.
