A resident of Wellington has a arbvanee. It appears that fie has become thd-oeeapier of a woll»known hotel, which though does a remarkably good businesi, H in «qch ft dilapidated condition that it needs constant repairing^ 4 few days ago onff oftbe shingles on the root got out of order/ and a carpenter was sent fof, to repair it. After fixing the shingle, he was getting off when be broke a pane of glasfl in a window, and a glazier had to b* seat for to make things right. The glazier put a new pane of glass into the window, but in doing so he b?oke down some gas fittings, and the services of the pasfitter , bad to be obtained. The gas< fitter, having done lis work, was about to remorer^aiii ladder, wbicii was a very heavy one y when it fell and smashed another, window. Then the glazier wits sent for again, and after he had mended the wpdow^e was about to depart, butr unfortunately 3 , his foot slipped, and. he fell on the. roof of an dutbuilding, which w ; as very totfeit, :#n& went through,* and the ; carpenter has- been recalled. The hotelkecpet%pi tire tradesmen are combining to drive him into theJßankruptoy Court. In speaking of the errors in the Ocean Mail's chart, the New Zealand Herald fays 4 :— Moreover, this variation in the obart was known more than three years ago. The Ainerieau scientific party who visited the Chatham Islands to obtain the transit of Venus in 1874 corrected the error, and we maintain that after such a correction no shipmaster having command of a vessel like the Ocean Mail, should have been ignorant of this error ia old charts. This is a point which is well worthy of the consideration of marine insurance companies. Not that in this case it ia, worth a farthiog a» an argument to favor the escape of the captain and ofScen of the Ocoan Mail from well" mCTitetl^oonsure and punishment ; but thi» question of chart alteration, whenever necessary, should be one to which all marine insurance agents ought to be instructed to give speedy attention, and enforce their knowledge on all insurers o ships. This would help ia tome cases both to lessen risks and reduce the hazard to lives' It ya % question for ship owners and freighters also. It ia the fact, although dUpuied and denied iiHhe columns of the New Zealand Times; that a domestic quarrel occurteih at a reeet .Cabinet meeting, which very noarly approached a real break-up. We aro informed that tho ground of dispute was tbo proposed Education Bill, with regard fco whioa the Ministry had previously done nothing beyond giving an ingteuction 4© ihv fJolieitor*General to draft a suitable measure.
