The fire was prevented from spreading to the adjacent buildings by the exertions of the inhabitants. Several late members o( the Greymouth and Hokitika Fire , Brigades rendered valuable assistance. No local Brigade. Tuball is the sole sufferer; hig losses are estimated at

over £2000. Insured in the South , British for £1250. Chbistchubch, May 9. At the Resident Magistrate's Court a number of publican's were summoned for neglecting to take out licenses for extra bars. J. Barrett, of the Devonshire Arms Hotel, was taken as the best case. The evidence shbwed that r there were balf-doore and small windows at which persons while standing in a passage or W a room which opened into the street could be served with liquor from the bar. Counsel for the defence urged that it was absurd to call these separate bars ; no such definition was placed on the word v bar " i in England, nor could it in common sense be done here. The Bench said the Licensing Act of 1873 distinctly said the word "bar" should be deenled to include any room, passage or lobby opening on to the street j in which the public are supplied with { refreshment. A fine of £5 was imposed. Notice of appeal was given The other cases were adjourned tine die. Wellington, May 9. News received here states that that cable between Amoy and Shanghai is broken.
