CHINAMAN KILLED AT RED MAN'S.

Information was conveyed to the Police Camp, Reefton, on Monday erenisg last that a Chinaman had been smothered by a landslip at Redman's. The particulars of the accident, as furnished to our reporter by a mate and fellow countryman of deceased, are as follows :— The deceased Ah Lam|and his mate, Ah Quay, were at Redman'* on Friday last. It appears that the men hold two sluicing claims, one at Redman's and the other towards Italian Gully, but work had been discontinued at both owing to the want of water. On Friday last on the rain commencing it was arranged that Ah Quay should proceed to Italian Gully and the mate remain at the claim at Redman's, so as to take the fullest advantage of the supply of water. Accordingly oft Friday Ah Quay started for Italian Gull*, where he remained sluicing until Monday last when he returned to Redman's, bftt ' on proceeding to their hut found it empty, and going inside ascertained Frqm

the appearance of the fireplace, &c, that no one had been in the hut for some days. Surprised at this he proceeded along the race calling out for his mate, but received no response, and after going some dis« tance he found that a stump and some debris had rolled down the hill side, from which he saw the foot of a man sticking out. He became alarmed, and left immediately for Reefton to inform the po* i lice, reaching here as related. Yesterday morning the police, accompanied by the informant, left town for Redman's to get out the body. Where the deceased was killed was a lonely spot surrounded by dense bush, but another party of China^ men are working in the same gully about a third of a mile away. The accident, from the appearance of the ground, is supposed to have happened some time daring Friday last, as rain fell on that day. The deceased and his mate were cousins, and had been working together for some time.
