Wednesday last, at 2.30', p.m. was the date fixed for the sitting of the County Council, but as the Resident Magistrate's Court was sitting at the hour of the opening of the Council, it was arranged that the meeting of the latter should stand adjourned until 7 p.m. At the latter hour only tbree members were in attendance, namely, the Chairman and Messrs Caples and Dick. After waiting for the pre scribed half hour and a quorum not coming together, the meeting was further adjourned to the 21st instant. We are informed that several competitive schemes have been sent in for the County Council bonas for water-supply. , Mr John Williams, of Fern Fiat, has j obtained substantial damages in the Resi- \ dent Magistrate's Court, against Batchelder and Gothard, neighbors, for cattle trespass. We commend the promptitude of tbe local authorities, in relation to the removal of the grave from the southern side of tbe river. The work was accomplished on Tuesday last. All that remained of the body deposited there some seven year 3 ago was a few of the chief structural bones, thus showing how rapid is the work of decomposition under certain circumstances—in tbis instance prox- . imiry to the river. The remains were j conveyed to the cemetery. ' The " commemoration "of Valentine's Day, in Reefton, was "kept up" on Wendesday last with the " wonted enthusiasm." That is to say, tbat the various booksellers and tbeir shop windows were " got up " specially for the occasion. Crowds of people, nwle and female, rested tbeir noses npon the window panes eagerly scanning tbe floral daubs displayed, and as each gaizer alighted upon a fitting caricature, he or she would elbow out, and shortly be seen making a pilgrimage to the post-office. Although none of tbe harrowing consequences wbieh we pre* dieted in our last issue were brought about-— at least, nofc in public— cases of consequential damages hare arisen wbich it is said are sufficient to shake tbe foundations of society. Here is one : A certain gentleman in town whose urbanity and fickleness in, relation to the fair sex is not the least masked of his every day dispositions, has been " clean bowled out " in the act of forwarding to a married lady a number of valentines of a decidedly amatory tendency. The " injured husband " is said to be just now practising on the head of a pin, at one hundred yards, with a bran new Colt's revolver. It is but right to add tbat the perpetrator of the before mentioned — naughtiness is himself wed locked, and is just about the last man in the community open to sus» picion of that sort. Such is life. The building known aa Strike's Brewery, situated in the upper part of the town, was partly destroyed by fire on Tuesday night last, The building has been untenanted for some months past, and it is supposed that tbe fire waa occasioned by the carelessness of some tramps who had taken shelter in tbe bailding. On tbe alarm being given the townspeople turned out promptly and got the fire under before any very serious damage was done. The veteran Dunn (M.) was as usual, to the fore on the occasion and with others, rendered good service. The following late items from our Boatman's correspondent reached us last night : — Tbe Fiery Cross are now taking tbeitf turn at the battery, and a return of two ounces to the ton is expected. The manager contemplates crushing from four to five hundred tons of stone, the proceeds of which will enable the company to declare another dividend. The Alexandra mine shows a slight improvement in the winze, the stone making better every day since it was first struck. The El Dorado and Walballa, according to survey, will have to drive their tunnels further before tbey can cut tbe Just»in-Time reef. The Just-in-Time are preparing for another crushing, which ia expected to be better than the last, as the mine is looking better, and the last crushing being looked upon as a trial crushing from the northern portion of the mine. Seven stopes are now opened up,, with stone in each face. The Hopeful will be ready to crush after the Fiery Cross are through with the bat* tery. Tbey will have a large parcel of stone from all parts of the mine. The surface winze is down 26- feet, the reef going down as straight as a plumb-line. The stone is good, the walls well defined, and tbe most permanent make of stone in the district. The intermediate winze is down over 20 feet, the reef being from three to four feet thick, and of the same class of stone aa the last crushing. When they break through to the lower tunnel they will have twelve more stopes afc a lower level tban afc any crushing heretofore. Tbe Welcome commenced to sink their winze last week, and will not be long before tbey are on the same stone as the Hopeful, arrangements having been come to between both companies for tbe joint

nse of the intermediate tunnel. | It baleen arranged to celebrate the forthcoming anniversary of St. Patrick by a ball and supper, under the auspices of the Reefton Hibernian Society. St. Patrick's Day falling on a Saturday, the ■ ball wiU be held on the Monday follow- j ing. It is with regret that we record the death of Mrs J. D. Pinkerton, of the ' Abaura. lbe deceased lady had been in bad health for many months past, but up to tbe hour of her death, which took place at 1.20' yesterday morning, no immediate fears for her safety were entertained. Great sympathy is felt for Mr Pinkerton in the loss he has so suddenly sustained. " ...... i ■ j>
