FLOWER SHOW

COROMANDEL SCHOOL A LARGE ATTENDANCE fine display of exhibits The first flower show held by the Coromandel Primary and District High School took place at the school on Friday, December 8. There was a very large attendance of parents, which was very gratifying to the originators of the show as well as the exhibitors. The large number of entries was set out in the headmaster’s room and presented a very interesting and gay scene. The lovely shades of the flowers in the sweet pea section were striking and auger well for the flower gardens of the future. Mrs R. R- Forman and Mrs F. A. Mclntosh were the judges. Afternoon tea was served in the science room and was in the hands of some of the high school girls. Owing to the hot afternoon the refreshment room was very well patronised. The champion bloom was won by Anne James with her sweet pea, Ecstasy. Highest points were alloted: — Boys, Arthur James and Duncan Worthington, equal, 11 points; girls, Anne James, 27 points. The judges congratulated the school on the general excellence of the exhibits and said that although the weather had played havoc with the sweet peas some very good blooms were exhibited. Judges’ comments were that the miniature gardens were outstanding and showed much originality; those from the primers were deserving of great praise; some very fine shoulder sprays had to be passed over because of their not being painted as required by the conditions; the posies should be lighter and more compact, but otherwise were of good arrangement.

Mrs Forman briefly addressed the school at the conclusion of the judging and offered her remarks as hints for future use.
