SCHOOL CALF CLUB
MANGATARATA PARADE DAY MARRED BY RAIN Last Monday, November 20, will long be remembered by many people who were in the flooded areas, but though Mangatarata residents had no flood, they too were unlucky, for they had picked on that day for their children’s calf club gathering. There was an abundance of rain, but Mangatarata people are not easily discouraged, so the children arrived with their calves and both the judges and residents came along loyally to back the children up. Much of the programme had to be given up and luncheon perforce served in the school, to which the children did ample justice. The judges were Messrs Bruce Townsend and A. C. Rayner. Mr Townsend gave the children an instructive talk on what goes to produce the ideal dairy cow and pointed out the various important essentials necessary for milk production of both quantity and quality. He also stressed what was necessary for good calf management. The following children secured the highest points:— Championship, Judith Main, 1; Owen Cropp, 2; John Avans, 3! Barry Cropp, 4. Leading and rearing, senior, John Evans, 1; Ron Evans, 2; Brian McKay, 3. Junior, Judith Main, 1; Noel Evans and Brian Evans, equal. 2.
