McLEAN IN FORM
LEAGUE FOOTBALL POPULAR WITH CROWD ENGLISH FANS THRILLED Jack McLean, a former All Black Rugby player, but now playing for League in Britain, is evidently giving a good account of himself on the football field, according to a letter written by Mrs McLean from Bradford, England, to Mr and Mrs J. K. McLean, of Karaka road, 'Thames, where Jack’s parents live. In referring to her husband’s successes Mr s McLean writes:—
“Mac has played two home games —both wins—and gave the fans a thrill with three good tries. He is a great favourite with the crowd on and off the field. League seems to suit his type of play and he is very fit but I think a little heavier.
“The people here are wonderful,” continues Mrs McLean. “They can’t do enough for us. We were told the Northern people were hard, but I think they are just the opposite. The rations are not bad at all. Meat is very dear, but I think groceries are miles and ■miles cheaper than they are at home. Clothes are cheaper—children’s clothes and shoes are 'beautiful.
“Yesterday we went to Haward, famed as the home of the Bronte sisters. We saw their home, clothes and china —a real museum, but no wonder they died young, living in such a depressing house next to a graveyard. We also saw Wuthering Heights, which seems to be just a bleak moor . v . daughter Susan did not appreciate it at all. She lay on the cobblestones and would not budge.
“All the houses are stone, very grim on the outside but very warm within—'all attics and cellars, and miles of stairs to climb.”
