A. VOSPER VERY FIT 300 CHILDREN RUNNING PAEROA ATHLETIC CLUB (By Myles B. Hynde) Mr Starter sent the ladies away in the 50 yards dash last Wednesday at the evening meeting of the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club without, a break and the senior athletes should take notice how the ladies start.
With the years of experience that Jim ,Verran has had he should know by now how to start, but he is always noticed beating the gun.
Geoff Spinks is very fit for so early in the season. This athlete also looks very smart in his track suit and P. Gregson is another who looks the part when dressed for the track.
' I. Gillespie won the junior 100 yards very easily but the field was very small and Colin Carr was missing from the field. A schoolboy who was noticed running like a future champion was M. Mlead. Tihs boy is very keen on sport.
Hats off to A. Vosper. He was handicapped out of having any chance of winning in the one mile, but in the two mile this vigorous rider beat the •rest of the senior riders easily. Colin Neil rode a very unusual race. With two laps to go Neil had a handy lead
ofc the field, A. Vosper being a good • KX) yards behind. At the bell for the final lap Neil and Don McWatters started to ride as if it was a slow bike race. Into the straight B. Neil, a junior, made a break from the senior riders, A. Vosper being the only other to chase the game junior. B. NeiT managed to hold on to beat A. Vosper with daylight back to the other tiring seniors. rode well for his first appearance on the track and he will improve. The, announcer mentioned that D. Carden would be riding next Wednesday and urged riders. to start training if they wanted to beat Dave. Miss P .French ran very well. She finished close in the 50 yards and third in the 75 yards. Maybe the 100 yards will be her distance. The - announcer must get fed up with his job when the speaker system breaks down as it was very close to doing last Wednesday. * The judges were noticed frowning and scratching their heads in some of the children’s races, as eight or nine flashed over the line. The last event bn the programme, the 880 yards, resulted in a very good finish. With 50 yards to run J. McMillan, looked an all over winner but D. Lovelock, a junior, challenged very gamely to snatch the victory off J. McMillan on the post. An announcement was made that 300 children have been registered. It certainly looks as if the Paeroa club is going to have a good season.
