20th BIRTHDAY

NGATEA CELEBRATION

SISTER INSTITUTES ATTEND

The October meeting of the Ngatea Women’s Institute was the occasion of its twentieth birthday. Visitors from neighbouring institutes included Patetonga, Pipiroa, Waitakaruru, Kopuarahi, Thames Coast, Maramarua, Kaiaua and members of the Ngatea branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers.

Miss Adams, president of the Ngatea institute extended a very warm welcome to all the guests and asked all to take their seats around the beautifully decorated and well laden luncheon tables. Grace was sung by all. Mrs C. H. Waite, an original member and good attender of the<

institute meetings, then lit the 20 candles on the birthday cake, which was iced in the institute’s colours of red and white. Mrs Barriball, an old Ngatea member, but now residing in Kaiaua, blew out the candles and the cake was cut by Miss Adams. While the birthday cake was being distributed the visitors took the opportunity of expressing birthday wishes to the Ngatea institute and presenting flowers to the president, secretary and treasurer of the institute.

After luncheon a very enjoyable programme was all too soon at an end. »

A very interesting “institute quiz” was conducted by Mrs G. Pinnock.

Mr Kennedy, of Te Aroha, gave a very interesting and amusing talk on his recent trip to South Africa, showing many photos of well-known paces, along with souvenirs of his trip. A community sing was led by Mrs Pinnock with Mrs Waite at the piano.

An ice quiz conducted by Miss M. Me Watters was won by Mrs Hart, of Patetonga. The mystery parcel was won by Mrs R. Wordsw.orth, of Ngatea.

The sales table, under the care of Mrs Brien, did good business. The birthday for the month was that of Mrs L. E. Jackson.

Competitions for the day were as follows:—

Best bloom, Miss McWatters, 1; Mrs Darling, 2; Mrt Blake, 3. Vase of flowers, Mrs Harris, 1; Mrs Ander-

son, 2; Miss M l . McWatters, 3. Best leek, Mrs Keyes, 1; Mrs Harris, 2; Mrs Fisher, 3.

The singing of the national anthem brought a very happy afternoon to a close. Hostesses for the day were the committee.
