GOOD MEETING

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

A PIPIROA GATHERING The monthly meeting of the Pipiroa Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Wednesday, October I'B, Mrs Scott presiding over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the ode to friendship followed by the aspirations. The motto, “Real merit is not in success but in endeavour” was given by Mrs Keane. A welcome visitor was Miss Caddy, who was presented with a shoulder spray. The president thanked members for their untiring efforts to ensure jthat the (birthday celebration was successful. Birthday invitations were received from Puriri institute and the Mangarata branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers.

It was decided to make the usual donation to the leper fund. The committee was empowered to spend the money collected at the birthday party for parcels for Britain to the best advantage.

Dealing with the proposed summer school to be held at Ardmore College in January members felt that the cost, £9, would be beyond the purse of small institutes and a suggestion was sent to the district federation that if a delegate, who was prepared to demonstrate to institutes could be found, the cost of sending such a delegate be shared by institutes, embroidery being chosen as the art that would appeal to most members. Mrs McAulay gave an interesting and comprehensive account of the council meeting and was thanked by Mrs Scott. Mrs McAulay passed on to the institute Mrs Pinnock’s appeal for the building fund in which M|rs Pinnock said that if 2/fid per member were paid the debt would be wiped out. It was unanimously decided to send £l/5/- to the fund, which added to £1 already sent this year, would be 2/fid per member for the year, making a total contribution since September, 1048 to October, 1950, of £l9/7/- from approximately 18 members. As one member jocularly remarked, if all institute members had done as well institutes would own a summer resi-

dence as well as headquarters. Mi's Curry, drama convenor, was thanked by Mrs Scott for her untiring efforts on behalf of the institute. Mrs Curry in her remarks on the production of “Too Much Bluebeard” stressed the need for a stage manager and a prompt, urging members who would not enter plays to offer their services for these jobs which were so important to the players. Mrs Curry thanked Mrs McAulay for her valuable assistance at the festival. Hostesses were Mrs C. Parfitt and Miss Scott.
