SEASON OPENS

PAEROA ATHLETIC CLUB

D. GORDON. IMPRESSES

SPORTS ON THE DOMAIN

(By Myles B. Hynde)

The Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club had a perfect evening for its opening night last Wednesday. Congratulations to the ground committee for the condition the track was in. The athletic club certainly put a lot of work into preparing the grounds. Don Gordon was in fine form on opening night. This junior looks like being the goods. He will be good competition for Bryce Millington and Jock McMillan.

Avery Jeffries was noticed going well in the combined 880 yards. It looked as if Avery was carrying too much condition for running. The field is his home.

Last season’s cycling champion, A. Vosper, is fighting fit. This is unusual for Arthur for he seems to always strike form other years a week or so before the club championships. C. Neil, K. Millar and D. McWatters all look a long way from fit. More training boys. A large field of ladies faced the starter. A newcomer to the ladies’ ranks who looks like an improver on the first night’s run was Miss Handley. Miss B. Finlay was noticed on the scratch mark and this lady was also noticed getting off the mark very fast, just a little too fast. Jim Verran stepped out as fit as ever but I think Jim was at his best many seasons ago.

Grey Vuglar looks a long way from fit but this athlete is very keen and even so early in the season he is my first pick as the senior sprint champion.

T. Martinovich was noticed finishing on well in the 880yds. This athlete is a good hurdler. Mlaybe if the club was to put a 220yds. hurdles event on the programme once a month it would give the likes of Tony a chance to make the tops in the hurdle ranks.

The president, Mr R. Hughes, is always a busy man, he must walk miles in those two and h half hours. Mr Announcer was trying to be as good as a race course announcer in picking the placings as they passed the tape but seeing he is approximately one hundred yards from the tape he is just as likely to pick the last three instead of the first three. The same three judges were noticed in action again. How long will it be before they start asking for the photo finish camera?

I wish the club a very successful season. My tip to all athletes: There are three things to remember, be a good sport, help your committee all you can, and train.
