BIANNUAL REPORT

THAMES-HAURAKI AREA INTEREST ON THE INCREASE In presenting her report to the biannual meeting of the Thames Hauraki Plains District Federation of Women’s Institutes, the secretary, Mrs F. Symes, stated:— “Following the annual council me.eting in April last the ranks of the federation executive were sadly .depleted for many reasons. Mrs E. Clark was on sick leave and Mrs F. M. Ellery was still doing temporary school work. In May we received the resignation of our good and faithful Mrs D. Inglis with deep regret, as she was leaving to make her home in Auckland. Mrs A. Carter, another of our staunch supporters became very ill and has been in hospital for several months. We are pleased to say that Mrs Clark is now recovered and again giving valuable service. 'M!rs Carter hopes to be back with us in November. Mrs Ellery is hoping to be relieved of her temporary position shortly and we are pleased to announce that Mrs T. V. Neil, a previous executive member, has been co-opted to take the place of Mrs Inglis. We trust that our troubles are now over and that we shall be able to proceed with a full programme for the rest of the year; K Schools of Procedure

. “Three very successful schools of .procedure were held in Paeroa, Thames and Ngatea ih May. It has been decided not to continue with the federation monthly parcel to Britain, because of improved conditions there and we shall contribute to more needy causes. Institute magazine continues to flourish and the editor wants all the interesting news available for the Christmas issue. A good'response has been made to the dressmaking and arts and crafts classes offered. The competitions festival convened by Mrs McCombe broke all records and the high praise for the organisation of same received by the federation was very gratifying. A delegation to attend a meeting of the ways and means committee (Thames memorial centre), will keep us olos&ly in touch for completing the same and we hope we shall be enjoying in the near future the splendid facilities offered.

We are grateful to the mayor of Thames, Mr l S. Ensor, and Mrs Ensor,, for their continued support and to the citizens and business people who offer their help and co-operation at fall times.

“The Kaiaua institute has been transferred from South Auckland to the Thames- Hauraki Plains District Federation and we specially welcome them as they officially attend our 1 council meeting for the first time. A marked increase in the interest taken in federation matters is being shown by institutes and we feel that we shall be able to widen our interests considerably as their support strengthens.

“Our president, Mrs N. L. Lithgow, has attended birthday celebrations

wherever possible, which is no mean task in our widely scattered- territory. We do not know how she keeps going' • and hope she will now take a wirill— . earned rest. proud of the' arts and crafts exhibits sent toChristchurch, which will be on display today. Eighteen delegates attended the conference and we hopeall institutes wftl be at the next to be held at Wellington in 1952. ’ x , “We look forward to the return of our Dominion president, Mrs MlcNaughton, from the Amsterdam conference and feel • she will have much to tell us of world problems. MissKane, a vice-president of A.C.W.W., will also have valuable knowledge pass on. S 1 i*' 'W,; The federation thanks institutes for-' solid support and good work and hopesthat “we shall always be able to pat into action our better impulses* straight forward and unafraid “as our creed asks us to do.”
