SUNDAY DESECRATION

(TO THE EDITOR)

y Sir, Allow me to congratulate those members of the Paeroa Rugby Football Union, who had the courage of their convictions and objected to Sunday desecration and by so doing have at least put a chock in the wheel of organised Sunday football and sport in general. I read with interest the account of the union meeting and noted the personnel of* the ayes and noes.' While not desirous starting a # controversy I feel that it is high •time that some one expressed Christian principles in a country professing to be Christian and rejoicing in the name of “God’s own country.”

Is it any wonder that Communism finds such fertile ground for its seeds of hate and anti-Christ? The Bible sells us what to expect in these days. “Men shall be lovers of pleasure more than lovers of righteousness.” Regarding the Sabbath the Bible is very emphatic on its observance. Apart from the Sabbath commandment where in the Lord blessed the seventh day and hallowed it Isaiah (58. 13. 14) further “If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath from doing thy pleasure on my holy day and call the Sabbath a delight the holy of the Lord . . then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.” History shows us that any country that fails to observe the Sabbath is heading for disaster. If we forget God he will forget us. Once again the Celti-Saxon people are faced with another world war and it behoves us to make ready and repair the gaps in our hedges against that day. Mr E. J. Williams tells us that lie is “finished with .-football.” Perhaps it is just as well. We will leave it at that but there is a bright aspect, “there will be no more organised football in Paeroa this season.” Thank you Mr Chairman. I L. O. EAST, Seymour street, Paeroa.
